The following YouTube clip shows how to use some of the basic tools and functions of Google Earth. Please be aware that this clip is from 2007 so it is a bit out of date. I recommend that some time is spent familiarising yourself with these functions as it will make the task a lot easier if you are comforatble with the basics.
